Springbrook Hills Walloon Lake, MI
Events & Specials

Long famous for its magnificent winter wonderland and home to some of the premier ski resorts in the United States, northern Michigan is fast becoming known as a delightful destination which caters to tourism all year round.

Its brilliantly-coloured autumn, which ushers in one of the more copious orchard harvests to be found anywhere, has always been a draw forĀ  Michiganders themselves: thousands head north for 3-day weekends, to purchase fresh-from-the-farm hand-picked fruits which can not be found in big-city supermarkets. Michigan consistantly ranks among the top five apple-producing states in the country, in both quantity and variety of diverse cultivars.

In September and October, Springbrook Hills sponsors "Fall Mushroom Mania" weekends. Experienced guides provide assistance in identifying dozens of different kinds of mushrooms gleaned from surrounding woodlands.

Typically, a group will find 60 to 80 different wild mushrooms. These will be classified, with emphasis placed upon a handful of good edibles which are fairly common - some of which may possibly be found in vacationer's home area. "Mushroom Mania" provides a uniquely fascinating and informative holiday, and loads of food and fun. On Saturday night, wines from the Michigan's own Leelenau peninsula are featured along with the sumptuous mushroom dishes.

Visitors to our north country will discover that Spring is an equally beautiful season. Michigan boasts more than 250 species of disctinctive and variegated wildflowers throughout its dune ponds, wetwoods, meadows, and lush, deep forest floors. "My out-of-state visitors say to me, 'I had no idea how beautiful Michigan was in the spring.' The scented air, the new growth - it really is an invigorating time of the year," says Breidenstein

In 2000, the state legislature passed House Resolution No. 417, which proclaims that the last week in April, each year, be designated as Springtime Splendor week in Michigan..

Throughout the month of May, the proprietor of Springbrook Hills plays host to an event called "Morels and More." These weekends bring together enthusiastic and dedicated mushroom hunters from all over the country: outside of truffles, the morel is perhaps the most prized mushroom in the United States and Canada. More than 10 million North Americans search for this delicacy every spring! Individual participants have their favourite spots, and northern Michigan's harwood forests rank high among those. Festivals, forays, cooking and tasting parties abound.

Spring also inaugurates superb fishing. At the mouth of the Boyne River in Boyne City, steelheads and walleye feed in shallow waters. Within a 20-mile radius of Springbrook Hills, vacationers can cast their lines in a thousand different directions. Streams, rivers, isolated inland lakes, and the large bodies of fresh water such as Walloon, Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan, yield an eclectic and abundant bounty.

Vacationers to northern Michigan will discover an incredible array of arts and music festivals, cultural and heritage celebrations, historical observances of all kinds
